A passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Peru, killing 14 people and injuring five others, according to local authorities. The crash occurred in the San Juan district of the Cajamarca region, an area known for its narrow and mountainous roads.
Emergency responders, police and local volunteers launched a rescue operation shortly after the accident, recovering victims from the ravine and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Officials said some of the injured remain in critical condition.
Cause Of Crash Under Investigation
Authorities said 19 people were travelling on the bus when it veered off the road. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Preliminary assessments suggest that excessive speed, difficult mountain terrain or a possible mechanical fault may have contributed to the accident. A formal investigation has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Mountain Roads Pose Ongoing Safety Challenges
Traffic accidents are relatively common on Peru’s mountainous roads, where steep terrain, challenging driving conditions and infrastructure issues can increase the risk of serious crashes.
