SHANGLA: Torrential rain in Shangla and surrounding areas has disrupted routine life, with a landslide and floodwater debris temporarily blocking the Karakoram Highway at Bisham.
Mountain debris and a surge of rainwater spilled onto the highway, forcing authorities to suspend traffic in both directions. Passengers and transporters were left waiting as officials launched an operation to clear the road and restore traffic.
Intermittent heavy rain continued across several parts of Shangla, including Alpurai, Bisham and nearby areas, on Thursday afternoon. The persistent rainfall raised concerns about further landslides in mountainous areas and increased water levels in rain-fed streams and nullahs.
After receiving reports of the highway closure, District Emergency Officer Rescue 1122 Shangla, Engineer Malik Sherdil Khan, reached the affected site and reviewed the situation. He directed relevant departments to accelerate debris removal and remain prepared for possible emergencies.
District administration and concerned departments continued work to remove landslide material from different points along the Karakoram Highway and reopen the route.
Rescue 1122 teams also remained engaged in relief activities at Bisham and other rain-affected locations. Disaster response teams have been placed on high alert to respond quickly if further incidents occur.
Authorities have advised residents and travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys during periods of heavy rain, particularly on mountainous roads. Travellers have also been urged to avoid stopping in areas vulnerable to landslides.
