MARDAN: Special Assistant for Technical Education and Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) Chairman Usman Bettani visited the Trade Centre at Central Jail Mardan and the Government Polytechnic Institute Mardan to review vocational training programs, institutional performance, and administrative affairs.

The visit highlighted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s ongoing efforts to strengthen technical education and equip inmates with employable skills, while also addressing administrative issues at public training institutions.

Over 1,400 Inmates Trained Since 2018

During the visit to Central Jail Mardan, Skill Development Centre Chief Instructor Uzair Ali briefed the Special Assistant on the prison’s vocational training initiatives.

According to the briefing, 1,427 inmates have completed technical and vocational training since 2018, while 90 additional prisoners enrolled in various training programs during 2026.

The jail currently offers training in six vocational trades, supported by a modern laboratory and a marble factory where inmates receive practical experience. Trainees produce marble handicrafts, artwork, and other products, while female inmates receive instruction in tailoring, embroidery, and design-related skills.

Officials said products made by inmates are displayed for sale at shopping malls, with participants receiving a share of the income generated. Computer training courses are also available as part of the rehabilitation program.

Focus on Rehabilitation Through Skills

Usman Bettani inspected training facilities, interacted with inmates, and reviewed the learning environment during his visit.

Expressing satisfaction with the Trade Centre’s performance, he directed officials to further improve training facilities and expand the institution’s capacity.

“Hatred should be directed towards the crime, not the criminal,” Bettani said, emphasizing that vocational education can help former inmates reintegrate into society as productive and self-reliant citizens.

He added that TEVTA would continue working with the prison administration to expand skills development opportunities for prisoners.

Bettani also praised Central Jail Mardan Superintendent Samiullah Khan and the prison staff for their efforts in managing the vocational training programs.

Administrative Issue Raised at Government Polytechnic Institute

Later, the Special Assistant visited the Government Polytechnic Institute Mardan, where he reviewed the institute’s academic performance, administrative affairs, workshops, laboratories, and teaching facilities.

During the visit, Bettani took notice of a complaint alleging that official residential quarters were being illegally occupied by retired employees.

He directed the institute’s principal to appear at his office in Peshawar with the relevant records, saying the matter would be reviewed on merit and any necessary action would be taken in accordance with the law.
