Doctors at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital have successfully removed a 285-gram congenital eye tumor from a three-day-old newborn, following a complex three-hour surgery. Hospital officials described the procedure as the first documented case of its kind in Pakistan.
According to the hospital, the multidisciplinary medical team carefully removed the large congenital tumor, allowing the newborn to recover safely after the operation. Doctors said the case represents a significant achievement in pediatric ophthalmic surgery due to the patient’s age and the size of the tumor.
Three-Hour Surgery Successfully Completed
Hospital officials said the delicate operation lasted nearly three hours, during which surgeons successfully removed the tumor while ensuring the infant’s safety.
The procedure was performed by a specialized team of ophthalmic surgeons experienced in treating complex eye conditions in newborns.
Artificial Eye Planned After Recovery
According to Dr. Tayyab Afghani, the child will receive an artificial eye (ocular prosthesis) after making a full recovery from surgery.
Doctors said the prosthetic eye is expected to help improve the child’s appearance and support normal development as they grow.
Doctors Urge Early Medical Evaluation
Medical experts advised parents to seek immediate medical attention if a newborn develops unusual swelling, enlargement, or any visible abnormality in or around the eye.
They emphasized that early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly improve outcomes for infants with rare congenital eye conditions.
