A new study has found that long-term antidepressant use may offer limited benefits for some patients while potentially exposing them to a range of health risks. Researchers are urging healthcare providers to reassess treatment plans regularly, particularly for individuals who have been taking the medications for extended periods.
The findings are significant because depression affects more than 330 million people worldwide, and a large proportion of patients rely on antidepressant medications as part of their treatment. Research also shows that antidepressant use is nearly twice as common among women as it is among men.
In high-income countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, many patients continue taking antidepressants for years. However, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that commonly prescribed antidepressants may not work by correcting a simple deficiency of serotonin, a chemical messenger in the brain, as previously believed.
Researchers highlight withdrawal concerns
Researchers involved in the study warned that long-term use of antidepressants can lead to significant withdrawal symptoms when patients attempt to stop taking the medication. In some cases, these symptoms may be more severe and longer-lasting than expected.
The study notes that withdrawal effects can make it difficult for some patients to discontinue treatment, even when the original symptoms of depression have improved.
Call for regular treatment reviews
In light of the findings, researchers have recommended that doctors conduct a formal review of antidepressant treatment at least every six months. Regular assessments can help determine whether the medication remains beneficial and whether adjustments to treatment may be necessary.
The researchers emphasized the importance of individualized care and ongoing monitoring to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate treatment based on their current health needs and circumstances.
