Study Highlights Vital Role of Body Fat Beyond Weight Gain

Researchers say healthy fat tissue is essential for metabolism, hormone production, and energy storage, with findings offering new insights into rare genetic disorders.

A new study has highlighted that body fat (adipose tissue) is far more than a source of excess weight, describing it as a vital organ that plays a key role in energy storage, hormone production, and maintaining a healthy metabolism.

Researchers explained that while excessive body fat is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, an abnormal lack of fat tissue can also have serious health consequences.

The study focused on a rare genetic disorder known as Familial Partial Lipodystrophy Type 2 (FPLD2), a condition in which fat tissue is lost or abnormally distributed in certain parts of the body. People with the disorder are at increased risk of developing diabetes and other metabolic diseases.

A research team led by Dr. Elif Oral, an endocrinologist in the United States, found that fat cells affected by the condition develop significant internal abnormalities that disrupt the body’s metabolic processes.

To better understand the disease, scientists developed a mouse model in which the LMNA (Lamin A/C) gene was selectively disabled in fat cells. Mutations in the same gene are associated with FPLD2 in humans.

According to the researchers, the findings improve understanding of how healthy fat tissue supports normal metabolism and may contribute to the development of new treatments for diabetes, lipodystrophy, and other metabolic disorders.

The researchers emphasized that further studies are needed before the findings can be translated into clinical treatments.
