ISLAMABAD: Deputy Chairman Senate Syedal Khan Nasir has said the government is taking effective measures to promote business and commercial activities, strengthen economic stability, improve governance and address issues faced by the public.
He made the remarks during meetings with lawyers, civil society representatives, political and social figures, professionals and various delegations at Parliament House on Friday.
Among those who met the deputy chairman were Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works Senator Nasir Butt, Kashmir Women Commission member Rehana Khan, noted footballer Mubashir Sanjrani and Balochistan Assembly member Mir Asim Kird Galo, along with other representatives.
Focus on Public Issues and Economic Activity
During the meetings, participants discussed issues related to various sectors, public concerns, improvements in local governance, promotion of economic and commercial activity and challenges facing the country.
According to the Senate Secretariat, Syedal Khan Nasir said the government’s priority was to find practical and sustainable solutions by taking the public and relevant stakeholders into confidence while providing maximum possible relief to citizens.
He emphasized that strong and functional local governments are essential for effective governance and administration.
Strong Local Governments Needed for Better Services
The deputy chairman said local governments serve as an important link between citizens and state institutions because many basic and everyday public issues are directly connected to the local level.
He said issues involving roads, sanitation, water supply, drainage and other civic facilities could be addressed more effectively through the meaningful participation of local representatives.
Syedal Khan Nasir described local government elections as an important mechanism for strengthening democracy at the grassroots level. Such elections allow citizens to directly choose representatives to lead and represent their communities, he said.
According to him, this not only strengthens the democratic process but also helps identify and address local problems more quickly and effectively.
Government Working to Empower Local Bodies
The deputy chairman said the government was taking necessary steps to make the local government system more effective, functional and empowered, while practical progress was also being made toward holding local government elections and implementing the system effectively.
He said greater involvement of local representatives could help authorities better understand regional needs, use resources more efficiently and resolve public issues in a timely manner.
Public Participation Key to Sustainable Development
Syedal Khan Nasir said sustainable development, better governance and effective public service could not be achieved without consultation with citizens and their participation at the local level.
He said strengthening local governments would bring decision-making closer to the people and provide citizens with greater opportunities to participate in resolving issues affecting their communities.
The deputy chairman added that the government was taking steps to improve governance standards, strengthen institutional performance and enhance transparency and public service delivery.
He stressed that the ultimate objective of better governance was to provide citizens with timely and quality services while making state institutions more responsive to public needs.
Syedal Khan Nasir emphasized that continuous consultation, public participation and local representation could help identify problems accurately and develop practical, effective and sustainable strategies to address them.
He said strong local governments could play an important role in strengthening democratic continuity, improving governance and promoting public welfare across the country.
