SALAMANCA, Spain: Celebrations following Spain’s victory in the FIFA World Cup 2026 turned tragic when part of a historic fountain collapsed in Ciudad Rodrigo, killing a 13-year-old boy and injuring several others, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred as hundreds of people gathered around the Árbol Gordo fountain in the western province of Salamanca to celebrate Spain’s World Cup triumph. Emergency responders launched rescue operations after the structure partially collapsed.
Fountain Collapse During Victory Celebrations
Rescue officials said the upper section of the fountain suddenly gave way, trapping several people beneath the debris.
Authorities confirmed that a 13-year-old boy died at the scene. Another teenager suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital in critical condition, while several other injured people received medical treatment.
City Mourns Victim
The Ciudad Rodrigo municipal government expressed condolences to the victim’s family, describing the incident as a tragedy that overshadowed what was meant to be a celebration of Spain’s World Cup success.
Preliminary reports indicate that a large number of people had climbed onto the fountain, and investigators believe the structure may have failed under the excessive weight. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the collapse.
