MUMBAI: Bollywood actor and filmmaker Sohail Khan has revealed that he experienced childhood sexual abuse, saying he kept the traumatic experience to himself for years before eventually sharing it with his father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan.
The actor made the disclosure during a recent podcast discussion on child abuse, bullying, and the fear that often prevents children from speaking about traumatic experiences. Khan said he decided to share his story to encourage open conversations and help children feel safe reporting abuse.
Sohail Khan Opens Up About Childhood Trauma
The 57-year-old said he remained silent for years because he felt ashamed and believed the incident might have been his own fault.
According to Khan, he eventually told his father about the abuse as an adult. Salim Khan expressed regret upon hearing the story and asked why his son had kept it hidden for so many years.
Sohail said he apologized, explaining that fear and embarrassment had prevented him from speaking earlier.
Experience Shaped His Parenting
Khan said the experience had a lasting impact on his life and influenced the way he raises his two sons, Nirvaan and Yohan.
He said he regularly encourages them to speak openly about anything that troubles them and reminds them never to feel ashamed about asking for help.
“If someone is troubling you, tell me immediately,” Khan said, explaining that he wants his children to know they can always trust their parents.
Encouraging Children to Report Abuse
Sohail Khan emphasized the importance of breaking the silence around child abuse, urging children to seek help from trusted adults rather than suffering alone.
Child protection experts have long stressed that open communication, supportive family environments, and early reporting are critical to protecting children and preventing further abuse.
