KARACHI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has expressed disappointment over the current condition of Karachi, saying he feels “very embarrassed” when he sees the state of the country’s largest city.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by former Test cricketer Fawad Alam, Afridi described leaving Karachi and moving to Islamabad as a difficult decision.
Afridi said Karachi is a city of good people and that he had spent a great deal of time there. However, he added that Islamabad offers better infrastructure and a more favorable climate.
“I don’t miss Karachi, but I miss the people of Karachi,” Afridi said.
Commenting on the city’s deteriorating condition, he said Karachi generates billions of rupees in business and provides employment to a large number of people, making its current state particularly disappointing.
Afridi also took aim at comparisons portraying Karachi as “Paris,” saying such claims make him laugh when he looks at the city’s actual condition.
He acknowledged that Shahrah-e-Bhutto had been developed well but argued that Karachi requires much more work and that a single project cannot be used to reassure either the authorities or the public.
Asked about his possible entry into politics, Afridi said he had considered it in the past but changed his mind in 2019, adding that politics is not his profession.
