Severe monsoon rains and flash floods have caused widespread disruption across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with lightning strikes and flooding incidents resulting in casualties and damage to homes, schools, and infrastructure in multiple districts.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), two children were killed and three others injured in the Bara Zakhakhel area of Khyber district after being struck by lightning during the latest spell of heavy rainfall. The injured children were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
In Lower Dir, more than 15 female students were injured when lightning struck a women’s religious seminary where around 250 students were present at the time. Rescue officials said the injured were taken to Wari Hospital, where emergency care was provided.
The PDMA report further stated that flash floods in Lower Chitral damaged 27 houses, along with two mosques, two shops, and a bridge. Four vehicles and several motorcycles were also affected as floodwaters swept through populated areas.
Additional flooding was reported in Upper Chitral’s Yarkhun and Mastuj regions, where one house sustained damage. Local administration and relief agencies said emergency assistance had been provided to affected families.
Authorities confirmed that relief and rehabilitation operations are ongoing in several affected districts. Two key link roads in Lower Chitral, which had been blocked due to flooding, have now been reopened for traffic.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued alerts amid continuing unstable weather conditions. Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety advisories to reduce the risk of further casualties.
