GENEVA — ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica has highlighted the role of international standards in reducing trade barriers, supporting economic growth and promoting a safer and more sustainable global economy.

Mujica, who has served as Secretary-General of the International Organization for Standardization since 2017, has consistently advocated the use of internationally recognised standards to strengthen trade and improve cooperation across markets.

ISO brings together around 175 national standards bodies and develops standards designed to support global trade, innovation, health, safety and inclusive economic growth.

Under Mujica’s leadership, ISO approved its Strategy 2030, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and built around the vision of “making lives easier, safer and better.”

His approach reflects a broader focus on ensuring that standards help economies overcome technical barriers to trade while improving quality, interoperability and confidence across international markets.

Before joining ISO, Mujica served as Deputy Secretary-General of the World Customs Organization in Brussels and held several senior positions in the Chilean government, giving him extensive experience in international trade, customs and public policy.

He has also placed emphasis on integrity, transparency and ethical governance within ISO.

Mujica is an advocate of gender equality and serves as an International Gender Champion, participating in a global leadership network that brings together decision-makers committed to removing gender barriers in their respective fields.

He holds a law degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and a master’s degree in international law from American University in Washington, D.C.
