SWAT: A 12-year-old student was killed and 28 people, including schoolchildren and women, were injured when a private school bus overturned in the Lindai Sakhra area of Matta Tehsil on Tuesday, rescue officials and police said.
According to Rescue 1122 and police authorities, the bus, owned by Hira School Darmai, was transporting students when it struck three women standing along the roadside. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
The deceased student was identified as Horain, 12. Among the injured were 24 students and three women, while several victims sustained serious injuries.
Rescue operation launched
Rescue teams responded to the scene and shifted the injured to Rural Health Centre (RHC) Darmai and Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Matta for medical treatment.
Hospital sources said some of the injured were in critical condition and were receiving emergency care.
Police register case
According to police, around 40 students were on board the bus at the time of the accident.
Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding may have contributed to the crash. Police have registered a case against the driver, identified as Umar Zada, and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
Authorities said further information would be released as the inquiry progresses and the condition of the injured becomes clearer.
The accident has once again raised concerns about school transport safety and adherence to traffic regulations on roads across the region.
