South Korean technology giant Samsung is reportedly developing a foldable tablet featuring a 17-inch display that could shrink to approximately 8 inches when folded, according to emerging reports about the company’s future devices.
The reported tablet could mark Samsung’s expansion into larger foldable devices, although the company has not officially confirmed its development, specifications or launch plans.
According to initial reports, Samsung is considering different folding mechanisms for the device, but its final design remains uncertain.
One possibility involves a 17-inch display that folds outward, allowing approximately half the screen to remain accessible when the tablet is closed. However, this design could leave the main display exposed to scratches and accidental damage.
Another possible design features a 17-inch inward-folding screen alongside a separate 8-inch cover display, similar to the technology used in Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold smartphones.
While the second approach could offer better protection for the main display, the addition of a separate external screen may increase manufacturing costs and the device’s retail price.
This is not the first time reports have suggested that Samsung is working on a foldable tablet.
In 2023, speculation emerged about a possible Galaxy Z Tab, but the device was never officially introduced.
Samsung Display has previously demonstrated several large foldable screen prototypes at international technology exhibitions, highlighting the company’s capabilities in flexible display technology.
However, the commercial launch of such a device would depend on whether Samsung’s mobile division identifies sufficient consumer demand for a large foldable tablet.
Competition in the foldable device market is also evolving, with reports about Apple’s potential entry into the category adding pressure on existing manufacturers to introduce new designs and technologies.
A 17-inch foldable tablet could offer users a larger screen for productivity, entertainment and multitasking while maintaining a relatively compact form when folded.
Despite the reported developments, Samsung has not announced a launch date or confirmed whether the device will enter commercial production.
For now, the proposed foldable tablet remains an unconfirmed product, and its availability, pricing and final specifications are unknown.
