SEOUL: South Korea’s jobless claims fell last month due to weak demand in the education, manufacturing wholesale, and retail sectors.
The number of new applicants for jobseeker benefits was 130,800 in March, down 9.1 percent from the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
It slipped for the second straight month after a double-digit decline last month.
Demand fell in the education, manufacturing wholesale, and retail services sectors, but employment in the finance and insurance and information and communications sectors rose last month.
Jobseeker’s Allowance is offered by the government to help unemployed people find work, taking most unemployment benefits.
In March, the number of income earners was 654,600, down 3.0 percent from a year earlier. This marked the first decline in 14 months.
