Johannesburg: A former speaker of South Africa’s parliament was arrested on Thursday as part of the latest scandal probe into the ruling ANC party ahead of the May elections.
Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, who resigned as speaker on Wednesday, was officially arrested, according to prosecutors.
The ANC veteran will appear before a judge on charges of corruption and money laundering, national prosecutor’s spokesman Henry Mamothame confirmed to AFP.
“He appeared in a Pretoria court,” Mamothame said.
Mapisa-Nqakula is accused of taking large bribes from a former military contractor during his tenure as former defense minister. He denies the allegations.
On Wednesday, he resigned as speaker and the legislature, effective immediately.
