MOSCOW: Russia has warned that intensifying conflict in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea could disrupt major shipping routes and create serious risks for global energy and food security.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the continued exchange of strikes was causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure in Iran and Arab countries, while increasing the danger of disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

The two waterways are critical routes for international energy supplies and commercial shipping. Recent attacks and restrictions affecting Gulf and Red Sea traffic have heightened concerns about oil deliveries, freight costs and broader supply-chain disruption.

Zakharova urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could widen the geographical scope of the conflict or further destabilise the Middle East.

She said a broader confrontation could have “critical consequences” for international energy and food security, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry statement issued on July 23.

Russia Calls for Return to Diplomacy

Moscow said the latest escalation had created additional obstacles for mediation efforts intended to revive negotiations between the United States and Iran.

Those efforts are linked to the June 17 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which outlined commitments related to sanctions, Iran’s nuclear programme and negotiations towards a broader settlement.

Russia said it remained committed to resolving disputes in the region through political and diplomatic channels while respecting the interests of all regional states.

Zakharova added that Moscow was prepared to provide assistance to efforts aimed at reducing tensions and restoring negotiations.

The warning comes amid renewed international concern over instability around the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea, where disruptions could affect oil supplies, shipping schedules and economies heavily dependent on imported energy.
