ISLAMABAD, August 12, 2026: Russia and COMSTECH have discussed new opportunities to expand cooperation in science, technology, higher education and academic exchanges, with both sides agreeing to accelerate joint initiatives and strengthen institutional links.
Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev received a delegation from the OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) led by Coordinator General Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary.
The talks focused on widening cooperation between Russia and COMSTECH in Moscow’s capacity as an Observer State of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Academic Exchanges and Joint Research in Focus
During the meeting, Dr. Iqbal Choudhary highlighted existing cooperation with Kazan Federal University and the Russian Association of Earthquake Engineering and Protection against Natural and Man-Made Hazards.
Both sides identified strong potential to expand academic exchanges by strengthening university-to-university partnerships, promoting scholarship opportunities and launching more joint fundamental research projects.
They also stressed the need to move faster on initiatives agreed during the first meeting of the Working Group on Cooperation between COMSTECH and the Russian Federation in science, technology and higher education.
That meeting was held in Kazan on May 13, 2026, on the sidelines of the Russia–Islamic World: KazanForum.
Russia Backs Deeper Engagement With OIC, Pakistan
Ambassador Khorev reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to expanding engagement with the OIC and Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan.
The two sides said stronger cooperation with COMSTECH could also contribute to improving Pakistan-Russia relations, particularly in science, research, education and technology.
They agreed to maintain regular contact and support the implementation of joint projects aimed at deepening academic and scientific collaboration.
The discussions reflect a broader effort to turn existing institutional ties into more practical cooperation through scholarships, research partnerships and stronger links between universities and scientific organizations.
