MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao has undergone significant physical transformations for his film roles, including gaining around 13 kilograms to portray freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose in the 2017 web series Bose: Dead/Alive and later losing about 10kg in a month.
Rao, who turned 42 on August 31, has frequently drawn attention for his commitment to adapting his appearance to the demands of different characters. His approach has been compared with that of Aamir Khan, who famously gained and later lost weight for his role in Dangal.
Rajkummar Rao’s weight transformation
Rao gained approximately 13kg for his portrayal of Subhas Chandra Bose in Bose: Dead/Alive. After completing the project, he said he knew the additional weight would have to be reduced quickly for his next role.
The actor previously revealed that he followed a restrictive eating routine while trying to lose the weight. He said he skipped breakfast and lunch and mainly relied on a protein-rich meal at night.
Rao also incorporated regular physical training into his routine, including cardio and strength exercises. He said his workouts lasted around three hours a day during the weight-loss period.
The actor acknowledged that maintaining the routine was particularly challenging during festivals and social gatherings, when he had to avoid many of his preferred foods to stay on track with his goal.
Rao to portray Sourav Ganguly
Rao is now set to play former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the upcoming biographical film Dada.
The first look of the film was released on Ganguly’s 54th birthday. The project is expected to explore significant aspects of the former cricketer’s career and life.
The film is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg.
