KARACHI: A 27-year-old woman from Tando Allah Yar has been diagnosed with rabies at Jinnah Hospital Karachi after reportedly developing symptoms of the viral disease several months after being bitten by a stray dog.
Hospital officials said the woman was brought to the hospital’s emergency department on Saturday with symptoms consistent with rabies. She was subsequently admitted to a special ward after the diagnosis was confirmed and remained under treatment for two days.
Family takes patient home
According to hospital officials, the woman was later taken home by her family at their own request.
The patient had reportedly been bitten by a stray dog on her right ankle around six months ago. Her family claimed that she had received rabies-prevention vaccination after the bite, but hospital officials said no evidence of vaccination was provided by the family.
23 rabies cases reported in Sindh this year
According to the information provided by hospital authorities, 23 rabies cases have been reported in Sindh so far this year. Of these, 14 were reported at Indus Hospital and nine at Jinnah Hospital.
Health experts advise people bitten by stray or potentially rabid animals to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention. Timely assessment and appropriate post-exposure vaccination are considered essential after a suspected rabies exposure.
