Punjab to observe four-day long weekend from February 5 as Basant preparations pick up

Punjab: Punjab will observe a four-day long weekend starting Wednesday, February 5, as Kashmir Day, a provincial Basant holiday, and the regular weekend align to provide an extended break across the province.

The long weekend will begin with Kashmir Day on February 5, a nationwide public holiday, followed by a provincial holiday on February 6 in connection with Basant. Saturday and Sunday will complete the extended break, affecting government offices, educational institutions, and many private-sector workplaces.

Basant preparations underway in Lahore

The provincial holiday comes as Basant preparations have already begun in Lahore, where authorities have allowed a time-bound and regulated sale of kites and related materials. Officials have permitted the sale of kites, spools, and kite string from February 1 to February 8, after which a complete ban on the manufacturing and sale of kite-related items will come into force.

According to official figures, 2,246 traders have been approved to conduct sales across the city during the permitted period. A total of 2,504 traders applied for registration online, with 163 applications still under review and 95 rejected. Authorities said the registration process will remain open until February 8, with further approvals expected.

Markets see rush, prices rise

With sales now underway, residents have flocked to inner-city markets in Lahore to purchase Basant supplies, leading to heavy crowds in several areas. Some shopkeepers reported closing earlier than usual due to the rush, while buyers complained about rising prices.

Market rates showed a single tawa gaddi selling for between Rs250 and Rs300, while a one-and-a-half tawa gaddi was priced between Rs450 and Rs500. Traders said a one-piece panna was selling for around Rs4,000, with the one-and-a-half piece priced at approximately Rs6,000.

Authorities have said the regulated sales window is aimed at balancing festive activity with public safety concerns. The extended holiday period is expected to increase travel and market activity across Punjab, particularly in major urban centres.
