The Punjab government has launched a green electric metro bus service in Murree, offering affordable public transport for tourists and local residents as part of efforts to reduce traffic congestion and improve environmentally friendly travel.
According to the provincial government, the service was introduced on the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and is designed to provide safe, low-cost and sustainable transportation across key routes in the hill station.
Rs30 Fare, Free Travel For Selected Passengers
Officials said the fare has been fixed at Rs30 per trip. Women, children under five years of age and senior citizens will be able to travel free of charge.
The electric bus service will operate seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with buses arriving at designated stops every 45 minutes.
Route Covers Major Areas Of Murree
The service connects Murree Expressway and GT Road with several key locations, operating between 17 Mile and Murree Bus Stand (Lari Adda).
The route includes 20 official stops, including Phaggran, Solgathan, Manga, Samli, Bastal Mor, Upper Samli, Khajot Ziarat, TDCP Hotel, Lakot, Awan, Malach, Masiari, Alocha Mor, Bara Hotel Signboard, Lower Topa, New Murree Road, Upper Topa and Jhika Gali.
Project Aims To Ease Traffic And Support Tourism
District authorities said the project is expected to reduce traffic congestion by encouraging visitors to park their vehicles at designated locations, such as 17 Mile and Lower Topa, before using public transport to reach Mall Road and other tourist attractions.
Officials added that the air-conditioned electric buses use environmentally friendly technology, helping reduce fuel consumption and air pollution while improving the travel experience for visitors.
Transport experts believe the initiative could serve as a model for introducing similar electric public transport systems in other tourist destinations across Pakistan.
