LAHORE, October 5, 2026: Punjab government’s ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ (My Roof, My Home) housing initiative has received international recognition after winning the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz received the prestigious award in Muscat, where she had been specially invited as a state guest.
The award was presented to only five selected recipients from around the world. Other recipients included Myanmar’s Htoo Waiing, Brazil’s Thiago Bawermann Gubert, Tunisia’s Abdelmalek Ghanem and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
The recognition highlights Punjab’s efforts to expand access to housing and provide low-income families with opportunities to own a home.
Maryam Nawaz said the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ project had become a symbol of Punjab and Pakistan internationally, adding that the initiative was helping provide a basic necessity to people who had previously struggled to secure their own homes.
According to the Punjab government, more than 200,000 people have already taken possession of homes under the programme within a relatively short period.
The provincial government has set a target of constructing 500,000 homes over five years through the initiative.
Pakistan previously received the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in 2007, making the latest recognition another milestone in the country’s engagement with the UN housing and urban development body.
