Punjab has approved a broad package of education reforms for government schools, including a new curriculum, AI education from Grades 1 to 12, lighter textbooks and mental health training for teachers.
The reforms were discussed at a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Officials reviewed curricula for English, mathematics, social studies, Urdu and early childhood education.
25% Reduction in Textbook Burden
Under the new curriculum, the textbook burden will be reduced by 25% to discourage rote learning. New textbooks will also feature QR codes linking students to video lessons related to their subjects.
The chief minister directed authorities to complete printing of the new textbooks before March.
AI Education from Grade 1 to 12
The Punjab government has directed the preparation of an AI curriculum covering Grades 1 through 12. The meeting also discussed establishing AI labs and expanding digital literacy in government schools.
Mental Health Support for Teachers and Students
Punjab will introduce mental health training for teachers, while online counselling services for students will also be provided. A proposal to appoint visiting faculty psychologists in every district was also reviewed.
The meeting further discussed legislation to end corporal punishment in schools and introducing alternative discipline measures, including classroom discipline corners.
Teacher Training to Receive Greater Focus
One day of the week will be dedicated to teacher training across Punjab. Authors of the new textbooks will also train teachers on the new curriculum and teaching methods.
Officials said English learning has already been completed for 35,000 teachers across 31 tehsils in 12 districts.
The chief minister also directed greater focus on primary education and strengthening students’ foundational learning skills.
