ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is all set to become the majority political party in Parliament following the Supreme Court verdict declaring it eligible for reserved seats.
Sources said the number of PTI lawmakers in the National Assembly is likely to be 92 as the Sunni Alliance has 84 members and eight independents.
After the PTI gets the 22 reserved seats it lost earlier, its strength in the Lower House is likely to go up to 114 members.
On the other hand, PML-N has 108 members in the National Assembly, PPP has 68, MQM 21, JUI-F eight, PML-Q five and IPP four.
77 more seats reserved for women and minorities were taken away from the PML-N, PPP, MQM and JUI after the Supreme Court’s decision on allocation of reserved seats.
On the orders of the SC, the Election Commission on May 13 suspended 77 reserved seats in the Sunni Ittehad Council. The contested seats include 22 seats in the National Assembly and 55 in the provincial assemblies.
In the National Assembly, the contested seats for women are 11 from Punjab and eight seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In addition, three reserved seats for minorities are also included in the suspended seats. Of the 22 contested seats in the National Assembly, 14 were allocated to the PML-N, five to the PPP and three to the JUI.
21 seats reserved for women and four seats for minorities were suspended in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. JUI-F was allotted 10 seats and PML-N seven more seats, while PPP won seven seats and ANP one.
In the Punjab Assembly, 24 reserved seats for women and three seats for minorities have been suspended following the Supreme Court’s verdict. These were split with 23 going to PML-N, two each to PPP and PML-Q and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party in Punjab.
Two reserved seats for women and one for minorities were suspended in the Sindh Assembly. Of these, PPP was allotted two and MQM one reserved seat.
