ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive, cancelled or unused SIM cards, urging users to ensure their accounts are connected to currently active mobile numbers.

According to a PTA statement, the move is aimed at addressing the misuse of WhatsApp accounts associated with inactive mobile numbers. The authority said some such accounts are allegedly being used for fraud and other illegal activities.

PTA advised WhatsApp users to review the mobile number linked to their accounts and update it if the number is no longer active.

The authority said accounts associated with inactive, cancelled or unused SIMs could be blocked as part of the enforcement process, which may begin at any time.

PTA also advised users who have changed their mobile numbers to use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature promptly. Updating the number can help users maintain control over their accounts and reduce the risk of unauthorized use.

The authority said timely updating of mobile numbers is particularly important because numbers that are disconnected or no longer in use may eventually be reassigned to other users.

Users have therefore been urged to check their WhatsApp account settings and make sure their registered mobile number is active and under their control.
