ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shiza Fatima Khawaja has said that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) takes decisions regarding the suspension or restriction of mobile internet services on directions from the Ministry of Interior.
Speaking to Samaa, the minister said the PTA had not yet received an official request from the Interior Ministry regarding a mobile internet shutdown.
Shiza Fatima said the government had not carried out a nationwide internet shutdown for around one-and-a-half to two years. She added that matters relating to law and order fall under the Interior Ministry.
The minister was speaking amid preparations for a planned September 27 protest and march, as authorities consider security measures in parts of Punjab.
Punjab’s Home Department has requested restrictions on mobile and internet services in selected areas of Rawalpindi and across Attock from September 27. The request includes possible downgrading or jamming of mobile networks in specified locations and requires action by the relevant federal authorities.
Shiza Fatima said that if a temporary internet restriction becomes necessary during the PTI march, it would be limited rather than nationwide, adding that the government hopes the situation will remain under control.
As of the latest available reports, however, no final nationwide mobile internet shutdown has been confirmed. PTA officials have said the authority would act only after receiving formal instructions from the competent federal authorities.
