PSL to begin without fans as fuel crisis linked to Gulf tensions reshapes schedule

Lahore, March 25: The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will start on March 26 without spectators, with matches limited to Karachi and Lahore, as authorities respond to a fuel crisis linked to escalating tensions in the Gulf region.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the decision was taken following government guidance to restrict movement amid fuel shortages. The eight-team tournament will proceed as scheduled until May 3, but without crowds in stadiums.

Matches restricted to two venues

Under the revised plan, all PSL fixtures will be held in Lahore and Karachi, with cities including Rawalpindi, Multan, Faisalabad and Peshawar no longer hosting matches this season.

Naqvi said limiting venues would reduce travel and operational demands during the ongoing crisis. The opening ceremony has also been cancelled, and franchises will be compensated for revenue losses due to empty stadiums.

Impact of regional developments

The fuel shortage follows recent military escalation involving the United States and Israel targeting Iran, triggering disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for global oil and gas supplies. The situation has affected energy availability across several countries, including Pakistan.

Officials said public movement restrictions were introduced as part of broader measures to manage fuel consumption. Naqvi added that the return of spectators will depend on improvements in the regional situation.

Tournament to proceed as scheduled

Despite logistical challenges, the PCB has decided against postponing the league, citing a tight international cricket calendar and the participation of foreign players.

The PSL is scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, with organisers aiming to maintain continuity while adapting to evolving conditions.
