ISLAMABAD: Chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme Benazir Income Support Programme, Senator Rubina Khalid, said on World Press Freedom Day that freedom of the press is fundamental to democracy and any curbs on it are unacceptable.
In her message, she said restrictions on freedom of expression weaken democratic continuity and hinder societal progress, stressing that journalists must be able to work without fear, pressure or censorship.
Media freedom and democratic responsibility
Khalid said Pakistan Peoples Party has consistently supported press freedom and democratic values, adding that undue pressure on media amounts to suppressing truth.
She emphasised that independent journalism is essential for transparent accountability and a strong democratic system, and that tolerance for differing opinions is central to democratic traditions.
AI era raises need for verified journalism
She noted that in the age of artificial intelligence, the importance of credible and verified journalism has grown significantly. Professional reporting, she said, remains the most effective defence against misinformation, including fake news and deepfakes.
Khalid warned that the spread of unverified information on digital platforms can cause national harm and urged media to prioritise accuracy, balance and fact-based reporting over sensationalism.
Balance between freedom and national interest
She said that alongside press freedom, safeguarding national interest and promoting a positive image of Pakistan globally are also key responsibilities of the media.
Reaffirming her stance, Khalid said protecting journalists’ rights remains a priority, adding that silencing voices does not resolve issues but instead risks deepening crises.
