A police case has been registered after a 23-day-old baby girl reportedly lost her right thumb while receiving treatment in the nursery of Holy Family Hospital in Rawalpindi. The infant’s father has alleged that hospital staff informed him the injury occurred accidentally during medical care.
The incident has prompted a police investigation, while hospital authorities have not yet issued an official public statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the case.
Father alleges hospital admitted accidental injury
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the baby’s father, Qaiser Mahmood, a carpenter from Attock, said his daughter has remained under treatment in the hospital’s nursery since her birth.
He told police that when he visited his daughter, he found her right thumb had been severed. He said doctors informed him that the thumb was accidentally cut by a nurse during treatment.
The father further alleged that hospital officials assured him an inquiry would be conducted but did not explain how the incident occurred or announce any action against those responsible.
Police register case, investigation underway
Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered at New Town Police Station under Section 334 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to causing injury to a human organ.
The case names a hospital staff member, Neelam Siddiq, and investigators have begun legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
