ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed the government’s determination to stop electricity theft, reduce line losses and improve power distribution system across the province. He informed that recently the government appointed new chairmen and board members in five power distribution companies (DISCOs) through a transparent process and hoped that these appointments would further improve the performance of the DISCOs.
The Prime Minister, presiding over a meeting held here to discuss the affairs of the Ministry of Power, directed the Minister of Power and the Secretary of the Power Division to coordinate with the provinces to stop electricity theft, DISCO performance and other matters of the sector. “Government’s approach should be adopted to prevent theft of power across the country,” the Prime Minister said. He also directed the provincial governments to maintain the number of police forces and Tehsildars as per the needs of the DISCOs.
He also directed the authorities concerned to deal with the corrupt elements in the power distribution companies with an iron hand and take strict action against them. He directed the DISCO to make the kutchehri system more efficient and result oriented in terms of public grievances. Prime Minister Shehbaz said that a meeting of the steering committee, which was formed in connection with shifting agricultural pipelines to solar energy in Balochistan, should be convened immediately.
In the meeting, the Steering Committee was briefed on the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) regarding the conversion of agricultural tube wells in Balochistan to solar energy. The meeting was further informed that a package regarding recognition of officers who have shown good performance is being prepared.
