Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his government’s firm resolve to enhance disaster risk reduction capacity across Pakistan, emphasizing collective responsibility and climate preparedness as essential pillars for a resilient nation.

Speaking on National Resilience Day, marking 20 years since the 2005 earthquake, the Prime Minister recalled the immense human and infrastructural losses. He said the tragedy changed the nation forever. However, he praised the courage, compassion, and unity shown by Pakistanis during that unprecedented disaster.

Sharif said that Pakistan continues to experience frequent climate-induced disasters such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, and glacial melts. Nevertheless, he noted that the government remains determined to stand beside affected citizens during both immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts.

Moreover, the Prime Minister emphasized that a proactive and collaborative approach is vital. Therefore, all stakeholders — governments, armed forces, rescue agencies, and civil society — must unite to strengthen disaster risk reduction capacity.

He added that the NDMA and its NEOC now use advanced technology and data to improve preparedness. These innovations, he added, improve early warning mechanisms and support quicker emergency responses.

In addition, Shehbaz Sharif encouraged citizens to take part in local preparedness campaigns, learn safety measures, and adopt eco-friendly practices to reduce future risks. Importantly, he stressed that communities, whether in cities or remote villages, must stay alert and informed.

“With unity of purpose, innovation, and stronger disaster risk reduction capacity, Pakistan can face any challenge head-on,” he concluded. “Together, we will build a safer and more resilient future.”
