ISLAMABAD, Oct 7: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet a Jamaat-e-Islami delegation soon, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal told the party’s deputy emir Liaqat Baloch on Wednesday.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Ahsan Iqbal contacted Liaqat Baloch on the prime minister’s special instructions and conveyed a message for Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman.
Iqbal said the meeting discussed during an earlier telephone conversation between the prime minister and the Jamaat-e-Islami chief would be arranged soon at a mutually agreed time.
He said providing relief to the public remained among the government’s priorities and that the matter would be discussed further during talks with the Jamaat-e-Islami leadership.
The latest contact follows an earlier phone call in which Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had asked the Jamaat-e-Islami chief to withdraw a protest call.
The party subsequently deferred the protest, paving the way for further political engagement between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami.
The expected meeting is likely to focus on public relief measures and issues raised by the party during its recent engagement with the government.
