ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for efforts to protect Pakistan’s national animal and other species that enrich the planet’s biodiversity, as the country celebrated its first International Markhor Day on Friday (May 24).
Addressing the crowd, the Prime Minister said, “Let’s work together to protect not only the Markhor, but all the species that enrich our planet’s biodiversity. That way, we ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.”
He urged all Pakistanis and the international community to reaffirm their commitment to environmental protection.
The Prime Minister said that the Markhor with its densely shaped horns represents Pakistan’s commitment to conservation of biodiversity and ecological balance.
He said the day declared by the United Nations General Assembly on May 2, 2024, confirms the country’s efforts and achievements in protecting nature.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said that the significant increase in Markhor population in the last decade is proof of Pakistan’s commitment to protect its natural environment.
Community-based conservation programs supported by scientific research show that collective efforts can reverse the decline of endangered species.
“Pakistan is proud to announce its significant upgrade to CITES Category I status as a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This elevation is proof of our country’s commitment to wildlife conservation and sustainable management of our natural resources.”
He said the country’s special law, the Pakistan Wildlife and Flora Control Act, 2012, is committed to responsible trade practices and the welfare of endangered species.
