Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, has held a meeting in Islamabad with senior United Nations officials to explore expanded cooperation on climate resilience, disaster preparedness and humanitarian response.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, included Mr. Mohamed Yahya, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), along with representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
During the discussion, Dr. Musadik Malik congratulated Mr. Yahya on his new appointment and acknowledged his previous role as UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan. He appreciated the UN’s continued engagement with the country, particularly in supporting humanitarian response and strengthening resilience against climate-related disasters.
Both sides reviewed areas of potential collaboration between Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and the United Nations system. Key focus areas included climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, sustainable development, and emergency response mechanisms.
Officials also emphasized the importance of long-term planning and coordination with provincial governments to ensure effective implementation of climate and humanitarian programmes at the local level. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to develop a structured roadmap for future joint initiatives.
