ISLAMABAD, Monday, September 21, 2026: Pakistan’s major water-storage projects are making steady progress, with the Gomal Zam Multipurpose Project physically completed, the Mangla Dam raising project nearing completion and land acquisition and resettlement work for Diamer Basha Dam crossing 94%, according to official project data.
The progress comes as Pakistan seeks to strengthen its water-storage capacity through major dams and smaller reservoirs across the country, with several projects now at advanced stages of construction.
According to a document available with Wealth Pakistan, the land acquisition and resettlement component of the Diamer Basha Dam Project has reached more than 94% physical progress, while financial progress stands at around 90%.
The Tangir Hydropower Project, part of the broader Diamer Basha Dam development, had achieved 22.15% physical and 45.89% financial progress as of June 2026. The Diamer Basha project has a listed water-storage capacity of 6.4 million acre-feet.
Work on the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project has reached 54% physically, while its financial progress stands at 76%. The project is designed to provide water-storage capacity of around 676,000 acre-feet.
The Raising of Mangla Dam Project is among the most advanced schemes, with physical progress reaching around 99% and financial progress standing at 95%. The project carries a listed storage capacity of 2.88 million acre-feet.
Meanwhile, the Gomal Zam Multipurpose Project has achieved 100% physical progress under its second revised PC-I, while financial progress has reached 92%. Its storage capacity stands at 892,000 acre-feet.
Several medium and smaller water-storage projects are also moving towards completion.
The Winder Dam Project has reached 92% physical and 88% financial progress and is designed to store 54,500 acre-feet of water, while construction of Tapok Dam has reached 91% physically and 88% financially. Tapok Dam has a storage capacity of 24,953 acre-feet.
Grauk Storage Dam in Kharan district has recorded 82% physical and 80% financial progress, with a planned capacity of 53,025 acre-feet.
Under the Construction of 100 Dams in Balochistan initiative, Package-II covering 20 dams has reached 88% physical and 85% financial progress. The package has a combined storage capacity of 91,610 acre-feet.
In Gwadar, the Shehzank Dam Project has reached 80% physical progress and 66% financial progress, with a storage capacity of 37,891 acre-feet.
Sunni Gar Dam has achieved 71% physical and 60% financial progress and is designed to hold 34,226 acre-feet of water.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chashma Akhora Khel Dam in Karak had reached 84% physical and 85% financial progress by June, with a storage capacity of 3,994 acre-feet.
Other projects remain at different stages of development. Nai Gaj Dam has reached 48% physical and 50% financial progress and carries a planned storage capacity of 160,000 acre-feet.
The Naulong Multipurpose Dam Project has recorded 6.38% physical progress at the study stage and 6.23% financial progress, with planned storage capacity of 199,000 acre-feet.
Detailed engineering design, tender-document preparation and PC-I work for the Hingol Dam Project has reached 94% physical progress and 65% financial progress. The proposed project has a listed storage capacity of 816,000 acre-feet.
The figures show that while progress varies considerably among projects, several of Pakistan’s major and smaller water-storage schemes are either nearing completion or have entered advanced stages of development.
