Pakistan issues alert for iPhone users on outdated iOS amid rising cyber threats

RAWALPIND — Pakistan’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT) has warned iPhone users in the country that devices running outdated iOS versions are at increased risk of cyberattacks, urging immediate updates and stronger security practices.

The advisory highlights that smartphones in Pakistan are becoming frequent targets of hacking attempts, data breaches and surveillance, making it critical for users to secure their devices. Those using older iOS versions are considered more vulnerable to these threats.

Users have been advised to install the latest iOS updates and enable security features such as Lockdown Mode. Additional recommendations include setting strong passcodes, activating two-factor authentication for Apple ID accounts, and restarting devices regularly.

NCERT also cautioned users against clicking on suspicious links received through messages or emails, noting that such links are a common entry point for cyberattacks in Pakistan. Any unusual activity should be reported to relevant IT authorities.

Risky practices to avoid

The advisory warns users in Pakistan to avoid using outdated software, installing unverified apps or VPN profiles, and connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi networks. Ignoring security alerts or unusual account behaviour can increase the risk of hacking and identity theft.

Emerging threat landscape

Cybersecurity experts have also flagged the growing risk of “zero-click” attacks, where devices can be compromised without user interaction. This makes timely updates and cautious online behaviour essential.
