ISLAMABAD/LAHORE, September 30, 2026: The National Highway Authority has achieved the revenue enhancement target set two years ago, while several major road and motorway projects are expected to be completed in the coming months, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said on Wednesday.
Chairing a high-level NHA review meeting, the minister reviewed ongoing and proposed projects, revenue performance, road safety measures and development programmes, along with the authority’s financial position.
Abdul Aleem Khan said the NHA would use revenue generated from existing streams to support construction of new roads in the future.
He said major projects nearing completion include the Lodhran-Multan Expressway, expansion of the Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad Motorway and the Peshawar Northern Bypass. According to the minister, the prime minister is expected to inaugurate these projects once they are completed.
The meeting was also informed that work on the Sialkot-Kharian Motorway was progressing rapidly, while construction had begun on the Karachi-Quetta-Chaman Pakistan Expressway, also known as N-25.
Lahore-Gujranwala GT Road condition reviewed
Expressing concern over the condition of the Lahore-Gujranwala GT Road, Abdul Aleem Khan directed NHA officials to take immediate steps to improve the route and provide relief to motorists.
He said road safety must remain a central priority in the construction and upgrading of highways and motorways.
The minister stressed the need for better engineering standards, safer road design and improved driving conditions, saying new infrastructure should meet modern international standards.
He also directed the NHA to seek input from foreign experts on road engineering and highway design, while urging the authority’s engineering teams to adopt international best practices.
M-6, PSDP projects and Balochistan funding
Officials briefed the meeting on funding available for the M-6 Motorway, ongoing projects under the Public Sector Development Programme and NHA schemes being implemented across all four provinces.
The meeting was told that the NHA manages only 3.13% of the country’s road network, but more than 80% of national traffic moves on roads under its management.
Officials also said the authority would soon present the prime minister with a detailed review of its performance over the past two and a half years.
The Federal Secretary for Communications and NHA chairman briefed the meeting on progress across ongoing and proposed projects.
The meeting also decided to approach the federal government for Rs108 billion in funding for NHA projects in Balochistan.
