A viral video showing unusually turbulent water inside a newly constructed well in India’s Gujarat state has sparked widespread speculation on social media, with some users linking the phenomenon to earthquakes or supernatural forces. However, local authorities and geologists say there is a scientific explanation behind the incident.
The unusual water movement was observed in Virparda village of Morbi district, where waves and fluctuations appeared inside a farmer’s newly built well. Officials have urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and rely on verified scientific findings.
Unusual water movement drew public attention
According to local reports, the well had recently been completed and filled with water when the surface began showing unexpected waves and continuous movement.
The phenomenon persisted through Sunday and Monday before subsiding on Tuesday. Similar activity returned on Wednesday evening, attracting residents from nearby villages who gathered to witness the unusual sight.
Rumors spread across social media
Videos of the well quickly circulated online, prompting speculation that the incident was linked to seismic activity or paranormal causes.
Authorities said such claims were unverified and appealed to the public not to share misleading information before official investigations were completed.
Geologists cite trapped air and heavy rainfall
Morbi Deputy Commissioner Swapnil Khare said the district geology team had inspected the site and found that the unusual water movement was most likely caused by air trapped beneath the water, not by an earthquake or any dangerous geological event.
Geologist Jagdish Vadhir explained that recent heavy rainfall had significantly raised groundwater levels, creating conditions that could produce the observed water fluctuations.
He added that the well’s location near a roadside, where airflow is relatively stronger, may also have contributed to the movement of the water.
No seismic activity detected
According to officials, the Institute of Seismological Research confirmed that there was no earthquake activity or active fault line in the area.
Authorities said a team of groundwater experts will conduct a detailed examination of the well before issuing a final technical report.
