ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in an alert on Wednesday warned of flash floods and urban inundation in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country due to monsoon rains.
Monsoon rains and thunderstorms are expected over Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Islamabad, KP and central and northeast Punjab from July 17 to 21 with occasional gaps that may lead to flash floods and flash floods, according to NDMA’s Emergency Operation Center cities.
The warning comes in the backdrop of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Monday saying that all four provinces including AJK and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) regions will experience fresh spells.
Besides, the NDMA said in a statement that Swat, Mingora, Battagram, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur, Abbottabad, Kashmir, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala and Sialkot are likely to experience rainfall accumulation exceeding 50 millimeters under the monsoon spell. .
Emphasizing the possibility of strong winds and lightning strikes, the authority issued instructions to all relevant departments to take necessary measures to mitigate the possible consequences of flooding and extreme weather.
Meanwhile, the masses have been advised to take measures to prevent flooding and ensure their safety from lightning strikes, stay away from bad weather and keep a safe distance from electric poles and wires.
A day earlier, the NDMA had also issued an alert regarding possible Glacial Lake Flooding (GLOF) in the hilly areas of KP and GB due to rise in temperature coupled with expected heavy rains.
In addition to alerting local communities, tourists and travelers in areas at risk, departments have been instructed to carry out their designated duties. Locals and tourists alike have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
