World Environment Day Observed at Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project Site

MOHMAND: World Environment Day was observed at the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project site on Thursday through a ceremony and awareness campaign highlighting the project’s role in clean energy generation, climate resilience and sustainable water management.

The event was organized under the direction of General Manager and Project Director Fasihullah Paracha and attended by officials, engineers, environmental experts and staff from WAPDA, the Mohmand Dam Consultant Group, China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) and Descon Engineering Limited.

Participants were briefed on the importance of the 800MW Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project in supporting climate change mitigation, improving water resource management and providing clean and affordable electricity.

As part of the observance, a plantation drive was conducted at the project site. Officials also reaffirmed their commitment to implementing environmental and social safeguard measures throughout the construction phase.

Speaking at the event, WAPDA Director Social Resettlement and Environment emphasized the need for collective action and nature-based solutions to address the challenges posed by global warming and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.

Key clean energy project

The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is one of Pakistan’s major renewable energy initiatives and is expected to contribute significantly to the national power grid through the generation of clean electricity.

Officials said the project will also help restore ecosystems, support groundwater conservation and reduce flood risks, while contributing to the country’s broader environmental and water security objectives.

The World Environment Day activities underscored the project’s focus on balancing infrastructure development with environmental protection and sustainable resource management.
