The body of Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi, who went missing after an avalanche on Broad Peak, has been recovered, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
SKARDU: The body of Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi, who went missing following an avalanche on Broad Peak, has been recovered, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
The climber’s body was located by local volunteers from the Tasir area of Shigar who launched a search operation on their own, according to the Alpine Club.
The volunteers involved in the recovery were identified as Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar. They were assisted by Zaman and other members of the team in bringing Sakhi’s body from Camp 1 to the base camp.
The Alpine Club said the body has now been transferred to the base camp. If weather conditions permit, it will be transported to Skardu by helicopter.
The organisation expressed condolences to Sohail Sakhi’s family and the wider mountaineering community over his death.
Broad Peak Avalanche Claimed Multiple Lives
The incident occurred around 15 days ago when an avalanche struck Broad Peak, leaving 10 climbers missing.
According to the Alpine Club, the bodies of seven climbers, including five Nepali mountaineers, have now been recovered following the disaster.
The latest recovery brings further closure to the search for those missing in one of the season’s major mountaineering accidents in the region.
