The suspect allegedly created a fake identity under the name Hussamuddin on a matrimonial application and used the promise of marriage to gain the woman’s trust. Investigators said he received Rs4.45 million through online bank transfers.
Threats to Leak Altered Photos
According to the NCCIA, after obtaining the money, the suspect allegedly threatened to circulate altered photographs of the woman on social media. He reportedly attempted to extort additional money by threatening to make the images public.
The arrested suspect was identified as Hussam, son of Saleem. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016.
Investigators Suspect More Victims
Preliminary investigations have reportedly revealed that the suspect may have targeted other women using a similar method.
The NCCIA has appealed to other potential victims to come forward and register complaints. The agency assured affected women that their identities would be kept strictly confidential.
The agency has also urged users of matrimonial applications and social media platforms to exercise caution when interacting with people they meet online, particularly when financial requests, marriage promises or threats involving private photographs are involved.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the suspect will be subject to the legal process.
