MARDAN: A one-day training and awareness workshop on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector was held in Mardan to strengthen participants’ understanding of climate-related risks and preparedness measures.
The workshop was organised in collaboration with Freshwater Action Network South Asia Pakistan (FANSA) under the auspices of the Integrated Regional Support Programme (IRSP). It focused on the challenges climate change and natural disasters pose to water, sanitation and hygiene services and ways to improve the resilience of these systems.
Focus on WASH Sector Resilience
Participants discussed measures to protect WASH infrastructure and services from the effects of climate change, improve water resource management and maintain access to clean water and sanitation facilities during emergencies.
Speakers said growing climate-related impacts are increasing the need for stronger and more sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene systems.
IRSP Executive Director Shah Nasir, along with Muhammad Ismail, Engineer Yousaf and Nosheen Sardar, emphasised the importance of coordination among relevant institutions, technical experts and local communities to reduce disaster risks.
Emphasis on Local Preparedness
The speakers encouraged participants to apply the knowledge and skills gained during the workshop in their respective areas to address WASH-related challenges associated with climate change and natural disasters.
The workshop also highlighted the role of local preparedness, public awareness and coordinated action in responding to climate-related risks and protecting communities from their potential impacts.
