President of the Mardan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Haji Owais Khan has described the country’s economic situation as deeply concerning, saying prolonged electricity and gas outages, inflation, unemployment and declining business activity are putting significant pressure on traders and the public.
Speaking to media representatives, Khan said industries and commercial centers were being affected by extended power and gas load-shedding, which has increased production costs and contributed to a slowdown in commercial activity.
He said rising prices have reduced consumers’ purchasing power, while increasing unemployment has further limited employment opportunities, particularly for young people.
Traders Raise Concern Over Tax Burden
Khan said traders are already facing difficulties in maintaining their businesses amid challenging economic conditions.
He added that continued increases in taxes and other financial obligations have placed an additional burden on the business community.
The MCCI president urged the government to engage with representatives of the business community and develop a practical and simplified tax policy that allows businesses to operate more effectively and contribute to economic activity.
Mardan Chamber Calls for Emergency Measures
Khan called on the government to take immediate measures to address the concerns of traders and consumers.
His demands include:
- Ending prolonged gas and electricity load-shedding.
- Reviewing electricity and gas tariffs.
- Taking measures to control inflation.
- Expanding employment opportunities for unemployed youth.
- Providing tax relief to the business community.
He said economic recovery would require coordinated efforts by the government, industrialists, traders and other stakeholders.
Khan added that creating a business-friendly environment and reducing pressure on the private sector would be important for strengthening economic activity, supporting investment and generating new employment opportunities.
