Argentina captain Lionel Messi has returned to his hometown of Rosario after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final, opting to miss the team’s official victory parade in Buenos Aires.
According to international media reports, Messi traveled directly to Rosario on a private jet, where he is expected to spend time with his family following the conclusion of the tournament. His decision came after Argentina finished runners-up in the World Cup final against Spain.
Messi Heads Home Following World Cup Campaign
Reports said Messi chose not to join Argentina’s open-top bus parade in Buenos Aires after the team’s return from the tournament. Instead, he flew to Rosario for a short break with his family before resuming his professional commitments.
The World Cup final ended with Spain defeating Argentina in extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal. The match also saw tense moments between players from both teams after the final whistle.
Argentina Receives Warm Welcome
Argentina’s squad received a warm reception upon arriving home, although several players remained in the United States after the tournament. Reports said 15 players, accompanied by head coach Lionel Scaloni, took part in the team’s public parade.
Messi is also expected to visit his parents, Jorge Messi and Celia Cuccittini, during his stay in Rosario. According to reports, his father was unable to attend matches during the World Cup because of health-related issues.
Messi Thanks Fans After Final Defeat
Following the final, Messi shared an emotional message on social media, thanking supporters for standing behind the team throughout the tournament.
He said the disappointment of losing the final would take time to overcome but noted that reaching a second consecutive World Cup final had once again united Argentina. Messi also congratulated Spain on winning the FIFA World Cup.
