KARACHI: Landhi Jail Superintendent SSP Arshad Hussain Shah has held a meeting with social activist Asim Khan to discuss prison reforms, inmates’ rights, healthcare and improved living conditions for prisoners.
The meeting at the superintendent’s office focused on humanitarian concerns inside the correctional facility, including healthcare access, food quality, hygiene, clean drinking water and legal assistance for inmates.
During the meeting, Asim Khan highlighted several issues affecting prisoners and called for regular medical screenings and better healthcare facilities inside the jail.
He also stressed the need to improve the quality of food provided to inmates and upgrade hygiene infrastructure in prison blocks.
According to the discussion, ensuring access to clean drinking water and medical and legal assistance should remain key priorities for the welfare of prisoners.
Khan said a dignified environment was essential for the rehabilitation of both under-trial and convicted prisoners.
SSP Arshad Hussain Shah welcomed the recommendations and outlined measures being taken by the Sindh Prisons and Corrections Services to improve transparency in jail administration.
The superintendent also reiterated the department’s stated zero-tolerance policy toward violations of prisoners’ rights.
He said improving food standards, strengthening healthcare facilities and maintaining security were among the priorities for the jail administration.
The meeting also discussed greater cooperation between prison authorities and civil society organisations.
Both sides agreed on the need for a cooperative framework through which civic organisations could contribute to welfare initiatives and support skills-training programmes for prisoners.
The proposed cooperation is aimed at supporting the rehabilitation of under-trial and convicted inmates while improving access to welfare services inside the facility.
The discussions come amid growing attention to prison conditions, healthcare and the protection of inmates’ basic rights.
The meeting between the Landhi Jail administration and the social activist was presented as a step toward addressing these concerns through greater coordination between prison authorities and civil society.
