KTH Makes Robotic Surgery History

Peshawar: Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) has achieved a major milestone in advanced orthopaedic care after successfully performing a robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery, described by the hospital as the first such procedure at a public-sector hospital in Pakistan.

The procedure was carried out by the Department of Orthopaedics under the leadership of Chairman Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Siraj. Renowned orthopaedic surgeon Prof. Dr. Awal Hakeem and his team performed the landmark surgery.

The operation was also conducted as a live demonstration, allowing orthopaedic surgeons from different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to observe the advanced surgical technique in real time.

Hospital officials said the initiative could create new opportunities for advanced orthopaedic surgery, medical education, training and research in the province, while further strengthening KTH’s role as a teaching and tertiary-care institution.

Dean Khyber Medical College/Khyber Teaching Hospital Prof. Dr. Mahmud Aurangzeb congratulated the Department of Orthopaedics, describing the achievement as the beginning of a new chapter in robotic surgery, advanced medical training, research and patient care at the institution.

Hospital Director Dr. Sajjad Ullah Dawar and Medical Director Dr. Awais Naeem also congratulated the orthopaedic team, saying the successful procedure reflected the expertise and teamwork of the hospital’s medical professionals.

The administration said KTH plans to continue expanding the use of advanced medical technology, with the aim of undertaking more complex and innovative surgical procedures and treatment services.

The hospital acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Qaiser Azim, Dr. Ahmad Zeb, Dr. Shah Rukh and the wider orthopaedic team in carrying out the procedure
