RAWALPINDI: The father of a prisoner who died under mysterious circumstances in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail has filed a murder charge against prison authorities, police said on Monday.
Shahid Bhatti, father of 22-year-old Shahwaiz Bhatti, who was in judicial custody for murder, filed a complaint at the Saddar Beroni police station. He claimed that his son was killed by prison staff in collusion with opponents.
“My son, who was transferred to Adiala jail on June 10 on judicial custody, had a dispute with another inmate named Saim a few days ago,” Bhatti said.
He rushed to the Rawalpindi District Headquarters Hospital only to find his son’s lifeless body.
“I am convinced that the prison administration, in conjunction with his rivals, murdered my son. When I visited him on July 4, prison staff initially refused access. After my persistence, they allowed a brief meeting during which my son revealed that he was confined to solitude and feared for his life,” Bhatti added.
Meanwhile, a coroner’s inquest and post-mortem on the deceased has been ordered to ascertain the cause of death.
