ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court has sought a report on whether responsibility has been fixed on the Executive Director of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) following the deaths of children at the hospital.
Chief Justice Justice Sarfraz Dogar heard a petition seeking action against the PIMS Executive Director and his removal from office. During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer described the deaths as a serious incident and requested that the official be removed from his position.
Court Questions Responsibility
The court asked what responsibility had so far been assigned to the PIMS Executive Director in connection with the incident.
When the petitioner’s counsel requested directions for his removal, Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar questioned how the court could direct that an official be removed from office.
The lawyer argued that the PIMS Executive Director oversees an annual budget of around Rs20 billion to Rs22 billion, yet four children were reportedly being accommodated on a single bed. He questioned how the hospital’s budget was being utilised.
The counsel further requested that the Executive Director’s services be withdrawn and that he be removed from the position.
Government Seeks Time for Complete Inquiry Report
During the proceedings, Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar observed that, in his view, the official had already been removed from the position.
The petitioner’s lawyer responded that although the official had been removed from the post, responsibility had not been fixed against him. He also told the court that the inquiry report had not held the Executive Director responsible.
Additional Attorney General Rashid Hafeez informed the court that the report submitted so far was only a preliminary report and that a complete report would be submitted within five days.
The Islamabad High Court subsequently sought the detailed report and adjourned the hearing.
